What is the goal of the recycling program?
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is responsible for providing a summary of the information collected from municipal solid waste recyclers, which are mandated to report their recycling activity by the legislature. This first report fulfills that requirement by presenting an overview of state recycling reporting and data collection methods, 2015 data results, and planned reporting improvements; as the state works toward a 50 percent recycling goal.

Who is reporting to the recycling program?
We have two types of reporters: Required and Voluntary. You are required to report if you are an Indiana recycler who recycles in-state sources of materials generated by more than one person. In general, this includes a recyclable materials broker, an owner or operator of a solid waste disposal facility at which recycling occurs, the owner or operator of a material recovery facility, or a solid waste management district. You may report voluntarily if you are a scrap metal processing facility (ferrous and nonferrous, such as an automotive salvage recycler or rebuilder), or a person who took action to recover, from the solid waste stream, materials that were not municipal waste, for purposes of use or reuse, conversion into raw materials, or use in the production of new products. This would include manufacturers or retailers.
